About Us

Chatham Harwich Newcomers Club

The establishment of the original Chatham Newcomers Club resulted from a discussion among some newly retired people at a New Years’ Eve party in Chatham in 1978. Since then, the Club has evolved into a larger, more functional, and more resilient organization. The founding fathers surely would be surprised if they knew the Club was over three decades old and going strong!!!

Today the Newcomers Club has over 400 members, draws exclusively from the towns of Chatham and Harwich, and has a diverse membership. The Club serves the needs of both newcomers to the Cape and seasoned residents who are looking for an enhanced social life and the opportunity to meet new people and to make new friends.

Who are we? We’re your next-door neighbor, the man or women down the street, the person you meet in the grocery store, the person you talk to in church, the person who waits on you in a store—and the list goes on and on. Some of us are still working. Most of us are retired. We’re teachers, salesmen, secretaries, nurses, economists, ministers, car dealers, policemen, and accountants—and the list goes on and on. We come from near and afar—Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and California, among others. Before retiring to the Cape, most of us vacationed here for years, and many previously owned homes on the Cape.

The Club’s motto for the 2009-2010 year is "Enjoy Life, Make Friends". It recognizes that we who retire on the Cape want to live the full life, make new friends, and renew old friendships. To help members meet these objectives, the Club provides a social network and a wide variety of events and activities. This year the events include a number of luncheons, a clambake, and various travel events. The activities, 23 in number, include some that are more sedentary and some that are more strenuous:

Here’s some interesting quotes from the Greek philosopher Epicurus (341-270 BC) which touch on enjoying life and making friends:

* Not what we have but what we enjoy, constitutes an abundance.
* Of all the things which wisdom provides to make life entirely happy, much the greatest is the possession of friendship.
* Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.
* We should look for someone to eat and drink with before looking for something to eat and drink, for dining alone is leading the life of a lion or wolf.
