CHATHAM-HARWICH RIDERS - INFORMATION SHEET - September 2009 Note the e-mail address for Chatham-Harwich riders: chriders@nac.net Group organizers for 2009-2010: Steve Patzman, Mary Brunelle, Gertrude Freliech, and Tom Philips (e-mail address for Chatham-Harwich riders: chriders@nac.net) 1. The Chatham-Harwich Riders is an activity of the Chatham-Harwich Newcomers Club. It is open to all members of Chatham-Harwich Newcomers or CONCH and their guests. 2. There are no dues this year. We will not be providing mid-ride snacks. Bring your own snacks (e.g., granola bars, etc.) 3. Most rides will be on Monday mornings, starting at 10 am. See the fall ride schedule for exceptions. Plan to arrive at the start point by 9:45 for last minute instructions and to be ready to “saddle up” promptly at 10:00. Rides will usually be about 15 miles and take about 2 hours, including rest stops. In general it is not necessary to “sign up” ahead of the ride. (The exceptions to this will be noted on the ride schedule.) 4. Information about each ride (e.g., leader, starting point, starting time, route, distance, difficulty, etc.) will be sent by e-mail 3 to 7 days before each ride. 5. If weather causes us to cancel a ride we will send an e-mail to the entire e-mail list before 8 am on the day of the ride. We will try to reschedule the ride for the next day. 6. All levels of riding ability and experience are welcome. We keep the pace moderate and will wait for those riders who are slower. There is nothing wrong with walking your bike up a hill if riding up the hill is too much for you. In the announcement for each ride we will try to advise you on the difficulty of that particular ride. 7. Every ride will have a leader who will be responsible for determining the route and will ride at the front of the group. Every ride will have one or more sweeps who will ride at the end of the group and be prepared to assist any riders who have mechanical or other problems. The leader is responsible for designating the sweep(s) and making sure that all riders know who is the sweep. Leaders and sweeps should have cell phones with which to commnicate if there is a problem. The leader should try to determine if there are any bicycle shops near the route in case of mechanical problems. 7. At any corner where there is a chance that people might miss the turn the leader will ask the person riding behind him or her to be the “corner.” The corner will wait at the turn until the sweep is in sight and it is certain that everyone in the group knows of the turn. If you do not want to be asked to be a corner then you should not ride right behind the leader. 8. BICYCLE HELMETS ARE MANDATORY. We will not be able to allow you to ride without one. 9. It is highly recommended that you carry a spare tire tube on all rides. 10. We try to practice good bicycle safety and etiquette. This includes:
