Political Discussions

We are an eclectic nonpartisan group of people with widely differing points of view on many, if not all, subjects and a good sense of humor. We get together every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, September through June, from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at the Eldredge Library, Main Street, Chatham, to talk and share opinions about international, national, state and local issues.

Our discussions are lively but respectful and civilized. Unlike the British House of Commons, name-calling and personal insults are not permitted. When several individuals wish to speak at the same time, the moderator recognizes participants in turn as their hands are raised. To maintain order, instead of pounding a gavel, the moderator may shout "time out" or vigorously shake the small dinner bell from Ben Franklin's variety store.

In December, we have a holiday party. Its purpose is to socialize rather than to talk politics. A picnic in June is our last event of the year. Participants are invited to bring a dish and a spouse or guest. This, too, is designed as a social event.

Members of Conch are welcome.
